How to clear System Data on Mac

System Data is the bucket macOS uses when it cannot file the space under Photos, Music or Applications. Most of it is ordinary files. Some of it is sealed. Measure before you delete.

What System Data actually contains

Caches, logs, disk images, iOS backups, Time Machine local snapshots, Xcode data, and a remainder Finder will not name. The size jumps because local snapshots and iCloud placeholders appear and vanish. A disk space analyzer that matches Finder has to count the locked part instead of hiding it.

Five things to clear, in order

Empty the Trash Space does not come back until the Trash is empty. Do this first so the rest of the numbers mean something.

Delete iOS and iPadOS backups you no longer need Old device backups live on the Mac and often hide in System Data. Keep the most recent backup of a device you still own; the rest is usually dead weight.

Clear developer junk Xcode DerivedData, unavailable simulators and archived iOS DeviceSupport folders regenerate. If you ship software, this is often the largest safe cut.

Remove disk images and installers Every .dmg, .pkg and .xip you downloaded to install something once. If the app is already in Applications, the installer is dead weight — including superseded macOS installers, which run several gigabytes each.

Drop app caches you can rebuild Caches are designed to come back. Removing them is safe; just expect the next launch of those apps to be a little slower.

What not to delete

The sealed system volume, files belonging to other user accounts, and private app data macOS will not hand over — Mail, Messages, Safari, keychains. No reputable disk cleaner can touch those, and any app that claims otherwise is overreaching. Time Machine backup volumes should be left alone: snapshots and hard links make sizes lie, and deleting them can break a restore chain.
